Description

English merchant banker (1740-1810) who was a foundational figure in British banking, and the founder of Baring Brothers & Co., one of the most influential merchant banks in global finance during the 18th and 19th centuries. Baring's knowledge of North American trade and merchants made him very useful in the closing years of the American War of Independence, helping the British Government to shape the commercial aspects of its final Peace Treaty with the U.S. Uncommon ALS signed “F. Baring,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, January 4, 1799. Addressed from Devonshire Square, a handwritten letter to Francis Freeling, a secretary of the General Post Office, in full: “I observe that three packets are returned after having landed the mails on the Island of Heligoland; & I apprehend some mails were landed on that Island before. I trust therefore that you will excuse the liberty I take, in submitting to the consideration of the postmaster general, the insecurity of that Island, being wholly without protection, the inhabitants few & very miserable, that the smallest privateer can land & seize those mails, which contain bills of exchange to a very great amount, that the safety of many individuals must depend on that of the mails.” In fine condition.
