Italian composer (1863–1945) whose 1890 masterpiece ‘Cavalleria rusticana’ takes a place among the most beloved staples of the operatic repertoire. ALS in Italian, signed “P. Mascagni,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8, Corso Victorio Emanuele letterhead, June 17, 1906. Handwritten letter to “Commander Avena,” explaining that he is postponing his decision to direct his opera Cavalleria rusticana as he has a hearing on his case in the Ancona Court of Appeals regarding a “pensioner.” In full (translated): “I am sorry to trouble you, but I cannot do so otherwise. I have received repeated invitations from the municipal authorities of Ascona to go there to direct Cavalleria, which is to be produced in connection with the festivities for the laying of the cornerstone of the hospital.
I have been delaying, but today an individual from Ancona came to ask if I was all right, so it is no longer possible to put off answering. The only reason for my delay has been the matter of the Pensioner [?] as I know that within a matter of days I must go before the Commission and do not wish, at any cost, to miss the final session. While other reasons would have pressed for acceptance of the invitation at once, the hearing on my case before the Ancona Court of Appeals is very important.
You know that my visit to Ancona would be most helpful with the general feeling and public opinion. Now it is necessary that you succeed in arranging my visit with the meeting of the Commission. Is that possible? I shall be in Ancona next Wednesday to Monday the 25th. I will be most grateful if that is possible; if otherwise…patient.” In fine condition.
