Important Norwegian composer and pianist (1843-1907) whose works, often with a strong nationalistic flavor, include such repertory staples as the 'Piano Concerto in A minor,' the incidental music to Peer Gynt, and the 'Holberg Suite.' ALS in German, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, February 13, 1896. Addressed from the Hotel Hauffe in Leipzig, a handwritten letter to “Wolff,” presumably the violist Johannes Wolff, in part (loosely translated): “Thank you for your flattering invitation, which I unfortunately must refuse. This winter, because of my health, I cannot accept anything official and I made an exception for Mr. Henings, for whom I gave a concert in Copenhagen, but I hope to once again have the joy of conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.” In fine condition.
