Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13.75 x 17.5, May 23, 1865. President Johnson appoints Robert Davis to the rank of "Captain by Brevet…for gallant services at the battle of Spottsylvania, and during the present campaign before Richmond, Virginia.” Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton.” The upper left retains the original light blue War Office seal. In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining, and small areas of loss along the edges and fold intersections. Accompanied by a printed photograph of Davis in his military uniform.

The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was fought from May 8–21, 1864, about 15 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, Virginia. For two weeks, General Grant threw his men against General Lee’s lines, with most of the attacks repulsed with heavy losses. A temporary Union breakthrough on May 10th led to a massive assault on May 12th on the Confederate position known as the Mule Shoe. With the Confederate line broken and Lee’s army on the edge of disaster, counterattacks were able to slow Union attackers until a new Confederate defensive line could be stabilized. The fighting was possibly the most intense of the entire Civil War. In the end, Spotsylvania was another stalemate with enormous casualties, known as the third bloodiest battle in the Civil War.
