Partly-printed DS, signed “Philip Kindred Dick,” one page, 8.5 x 7.75, April 18, 1973. State of California, County of Orange marriage certificate for Philip K. Dick and his fifth wife, Leslie 'Tessa' Busby, which Dick has filled out in black ballpoint and signed at the conclusion on behalf of himself and his wife. The certificate reads, in part: "I hereby certify that on April 18, 1973, at Fullerton, California, under authority of a license issued by the County Clerk of the County of Orange, I, the undersigned, as a Minister, joined in marriage Philip Kindred Dick and Leslie Ann Busby." In very good to fine condition, with light stains, folds, and creases. Accompanied by a copy of the original provenance letter from Tessa Dick, who states: “When we got married, he wrote the information on the form that you will find above the signatures of the two witnesses. The first witness was our neighbor, Ila Rae Howard, and the second witness was my father, Harry L. Busby.”
Tessa Dick was the writer's last wife. He devoted books to her and she was one of the main contributors with him for his classic novel, A Scanner Darkly. They also had a son together, Christopher Dick, who was at the center of a major religious experience had by his father. He received a message from an outside power telling him that Christopher had a hernia, and that if he didn’t get to the hospital right away, he would die. The advice turned out to be correct, and it saved Christopher’s life. This mystical experience was responsible for a major religious and artistic pivot in Dick's life — and was the inspiration for his late works like Valis, Radio Free Albemuth, The Divine Invasion, and, of course, Exegesis. An exceptional and uncommon Dick-signed item and a true piece of sci-fi and PKD history. It is also marks the first instance we that have offered an item sporting his full signature, "Philip Kindred Dick."
