French general and admiral (1729–1794) who led a fleet to aid the American rebels in 1778; though he sympathized with the people during the later French Revolution, he was loyal to the crown and thus executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror. Revolutionary War–dated LS in French, signed “Estaing,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 7.75, October 18, 1778. Letter to "Major General Phillips," sent from Boston Harbor, referring to the "intimate Union which allies France and the United States of America" and their cooperation in granting ship's passports for shipments of provisions such as food and clothing. In fine condition.
