Description

Prussian soldier (1730-1794) who provided invaluable aid to the American Revolution, joining George Washington at Valley Forge. Manuscript petition signed "Steuben," two-and-a-half pages on adjoining sheets, 8 x 12.25, January 19, 1788. A "Humble Petition of the Freeholders and Inhabitants of the County of Montgomery," addressed to "the Senate and Assembly of the State of New York," in part: "Your Petitioners are liable to great unconveniences from making the Highways through a large Tract of Country lying unapropriated owing either to the Proprietors not to be found and others unwilling to dispose or settle their Lands we therefore pray that those Persons holding Lands unimproved may be oblidged to contribute to the support of the Highways leading to and through their Lands." Signed at the conclusion in ink by Friedrich von Steuben, followed by one hundred of his fellow freeholders. In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining and soiling, and old reinforcements and small areas of paper loss to the intersecting folds.
