Description

Anglo-Irish soldier (1724-1808) who served as governor general of British North America and commanded troops during the American Revolution; he was created 1st Baron Dorchester in 1786. LS in French, one page, 7.5 x 9, April 17, 1775. Two days before the outbreak of hostilities at Lexington and Concord, Carleton sends a letter to Monsieur De Lanaudiere of the Legislative Council for the Province of Quebec, inviting him to be present at the Chateau St. Louis to witness a swearing-in ceremony to renew his oath as governor of Quebec. In fine condition.
