Lawyer, politician, and diplomat (1828–1898) who served in the United States Senate, as Secretary of State, and as Ambassador to Great Britain. Partly-printed DS, signed “T. F. Bayard,” one page, 12 x 18, December 13, 1888. Secretary of State Bayard issues a passport to George Henry Clements, certifying him as a "Citizen of the United States" and requesting that he be permitted "safely and freely to pass, and in case of need to give him all lawful Aid and Protection." The document lists his age ("34 Years") and physical attributes, including: "Forehead: medium, Eyes: gray, Nose: ordinary, Mouth: large, Chin: regular, Hair: light." In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some light creasing.
