Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11.25 x 18, May 10, 1819. Military land grant awarded by President Madison for service in the Revolutionary War. In part: "In consideration of Military Service performed by George Lee Turberville, a Captain for the War and for eleven months more than six years, Edwin Hull, a captain for three years, Thomas Farrell (a private for three years) and by Thomas Gaskins (a Lieutenant Colonel for one year and ten months more than six years), to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of the Congress of the United States, passed on the 10th day of August, in the year 1790, intituled 'An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain Titles to certain Lands lying north west of the ricer Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota'…there is granted by the United States unto Walter Dun a certain Tract of Land containing two hundred acres." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President James Monroe and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. Additionally endorsed on the reverse by Josiah Meigs. The white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition, with a small hole near the upper right edge, affecting nothing.
The land referred to here, known as the Virginia Military District (in what is now Ohio), consisted of a tract in the southwestern part of the state that contained more than four million acres. General George Washington had enticed residents to join the Continental Army by offering them large bounties in land in exchange for either three years of service, or the duration of the war. Claims on the property continued to be made for decades in the aftermath of the war, by veterans, their heirs and assignees, until the land was ceded to the state of Ohio in 1871.
