Early ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 8, House of Representatives, Committee of Ways and Means letterhead, September 18, 1866. Handwritten letter to J. C. Donaldson in Columbus, Ohio, in part: "My appointments are all made for every day during the Campaign. Much as I regret it there is now no day on which I can be with you." In fine condition. Garfield was first elected to Congress in 1862, and won reelection as the incumbent in 1866. He had joined the House Ways and Means Committee in 1865, where he stood in opposition to the greenback and advocated for the gold standard.
