Letter from Alan Shepard, chief of the Astronaut Office, sent to “Astronauts and Wives,” in full: “It has come to my attention that some people in the Astronaut Office feel that support of the Ed White Youth Center is mandatory and that it constitutes official Astronaut Office support of the function. In the way of clarification, support of this activity was never intended to be on a total official office basis. If anyone chooses not to support this function because of personal reasons, that is certainly his prerogative. I will clarify this point with respect to the upcoming fashion show so that public announcements do not indicate official office support. I hope you all realize that any participation in or attendance at charitable, civic, religious or similar functions is always one's choice. Only in rare cases, and with announcement, will these be considered mandatory.” In fine condition.
