Description

British theosophist, women's rights activist, and writer (1847-1933) who also became involved in Indian politics as an advocate for home rule. Uncommon ALS in French, one page, 4.5 x 7, August 14, 1908. Addressed from Hobart, Australia, an untranslated handwritten letter from Besant, who authorizes the use of her own portrait for an “elevated purpose.” She further stresses her desire that this painting, which shall be done of her, may become a “great triumph.” In fine condition. A fine letter from this influential campaigner for women’s rights, Fabian socialist, theosophist, and Indian Independence leader. In 1917, she became the first female President of the Indian National Congress. Both Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, spoke of Besant's influence with great admiration.
