TLS signed “F.L.L.W.,” one page, 11 x 8.5, Taliesin letterhead, August 6, 1948. Letter to David T. Henken of "Usonia Homes," in part: "We are sending the Friedmans a little sketch that may amuse you." In fine condition, with a block of light toning in the left panel.
David Henken (1915–1987) was the driving force behind the creation of the Usonia community in Pleasantville, New York, composed of 47 homes built on a 100-acre tract of land. He founded the Usonia cooperative in Westchester County and played a key role in bringing architect Frank Lloyd Wright into the project. Wright devised the plan for the community and designed three of the homes himself, while approving the designs for others. One of the houses Wright designed was the Sol Friedman house, which was built in 1948, the same year as our letter. The sketch Wright mentions sending to the Friedmans in this letter probably refers to his designs for their home.
