Description

Genet comments on the English translation of his debut novel, Our Lady of the Flowers

Prominent and controversial French novelist, playwright, poet, essayist, and political activist (1910-1986). ALS in French, one page both sides, 5.25 x 7, Terrass-Hotel letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter about his most famous novel, Our Lady of the Flowers [Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs], in part (translated): "I was very happy to receive your letter in excellent French in fact. But I must regretfully tell you that Frechtman has already translated N. D. des Fleurs in English and it is he who possesses all the rights to that language and for this book…regarding the movie, I have communicated your letter to the owner of the film…he will write to you and will tell you a price. It is with him that you must deal. But I thank you for all your kindness and I hope to see you soon in Paris." In fine condition.

Our Lady of the Flowers (Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs) is the debut novel by French writer Jean Genet, originally written in 1942 while he was in prison. The novel, blending semi-autobiographical elements with vivid, poetic prose, explores themes of homosexuality, criminality, and identity in Paris's underworld. Initially published anonymously due to its controversial content, it gained recognition as a groundbreaking work of queer literature. The first English translation, by Bernard Frechtman, appeared in 1949 and was instrumental in introducing Genet’s radical voice to a broader international audience.
