Description

"Only as complete human beings warring for democracy can we be sure of real victory"

World War II-dated TLS, signed in pencil, "Helen Keller," one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.5, Arcan Ridge letterhead, December 9, 1942. Letter to Helen Kellogg, in part: "What an adorable glimpse we had of you when we visited that splendid service centre last week! I was sorry that the time was too short to have a real chat with you, but I carried away with me a charming mental picture of you in that sweet blue uniform, serving, comforting and cheer- ing the uncounted lads whom a stern destiny is bearing through Chicago to all the battle fronts of the world. Going with you over the hospitable rooms of the centre gave me a thankful sense that there is a new strategy of good-will to strengthen the soldier with weapons of the spirit art, books and friendship besides keeping his body alert and the sword of his purpose bright. Only as complete human beings warring for democracy can we be sure of real victory.

You were a darling to send me such warm, dainty bed-socks. They feel like the protective clasp of your hand. Certainly they will guard my feet well in the long winter nights. And O the chrysanthemums with their white loveliness and enchanting fragrance! How can I thank you for such a shower of beauty? Goodness like yours is the only true Christmas I can imagine this year. But I know God's Love shining through good hearts is undimmed by any calamity, and the festive joy of the angel chant and the smile of the Blessed Babe new-born, even if clouded, will never be extinguished.

Yes, there is a fervent prayer in my soul for Tom, which means confidence that he will be given still greater opportunities of noble service to his fellowmen and richer satisfactions in fulfilling them. Polly joins me in loving Christmas Greetings to Mr. Kellogg, Tom and yourself." In fine condition.

During World War II, Helen Keller became a vocal advocate for returning servicemen and actively worked with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) to support blinded veterans. She visited over 70 Army hospitals in the United States between 1944 and 1946, offering solace and hope to wounded soldiers. Keller also actively worked to secure funding for the rehabilitation and vocational training of blind veterans, including those blinded during the war.
