Description

"My mother was the only member of my family who did not try to persuade me to 'give up' flying"

TLS signed “Paul W. Tibbets,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Executive Jet Aviation, Inc. letterhead, May 16, 1978. Letter concerning the naming of his Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber after his mother, and responding to a few other inquiries about his experience in World War II. In part: "A quick reply to your questions…During the war hundreds of aircraft carried names of individuals (mostly wives and sweethearts), cities or names intended to set that airplane or crew off from the rest. Custom was not involved; it was a matter of inclination on the part of the airplane commander and/or crew. I was aware that my aircraft would 'live in history,' consequently, I wanted its name to be unoffensive and one unlikely of duplication. Since my mother was the only member of my family who did not try to persuade me to 'give up' flying, and since her name was most unlikely of duplication—need I say more?…I can not confirm or deny as to anything being written on the bomb. Nothing was painted in a contrasting color. I have been told, and accepted statements that names, comments or slogans were written in pencil or pen by the loading crew." In fine condition, with trimmed corners.
