Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 9.75, February 15, 1859. President Buchanan directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “the envelope of three letters of ceremony, of this date, addressed, respectively, to the King of Denmark, the King of the Two Sicilies, and the Grand Duke of Baden.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by James Buchanan. In fine condition, with faint toning to the edges and folds. Although unconfirmed, these “letters of ceremony,” which were sent to Christian IX of Denmark, Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies, and Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, were typically part of the protocol involved in recognizing diplomatic appointments, such as new U.S. ministers being sent to foreign courts.
