Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, February 17, 1890. President Harrison authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “my proclamation prohibiting the grazing of cattle or other live stock in the Cherokee strip or outlet of the Indian Territory on and after October 1, 1890.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Benjamin Harrison. In fine condition.
Proclamation 296, issued by President Benjamin Harrison on February 17, 1890, prohibited unauthorized grazing on the Cherokee Strip (also known as the Cherokee Outlet) in Indian Territory. This action aimed to terminate existing cattle grazing leases held by non-Native ranchers, particularly those affiliated with the Cherokee Strip Live Stock Association (CSLSA).
The proclamation, which undermined the Cherokee Nation's authority and revenue sources, set the stage for the eventual sale of the Cherokee Outlet to the U.S. government, leading to the Land Run of 1893, where settlers claimed former Cherokee lands. The land run began at noon on September 16, 1893, with an estimated 100,000 participants hoping to stake claim to part of the 6 million acres and 40,000 homesteads on what had formerly been Cherokee grazing land.
