Vice-admiral and flag officer of the United States Navy (1890–1967) who commanded the Submarine Force Pacific Fleet during World War II. Signed book: Through Hell and Deep Water. First edition. NY: Greenberg, 1956. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.75 x 8.5, 316 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in fountain pen, "To Lt. Comdr. Margaret Soto, U.S.N., The Florence Nightingale of Oak Knoll—with much appreciation—Charles A. Lockwood, 20 September 1957." In fine condition.
Margaret Soto joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in 1942, serving in many duty stations including New Caledonia, New Zealand, the U.S.S. Mitchell, and throughout the United States. Her first and last assignment was Oak Knoll Hospital in Oakland, California, and she was selected as personal nurse to Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz after his retirement.
