Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti in 1792, he served as pope for a record 31 years, 7 months and 23 days, beginning on June 16, 1846, until his death in 1878. LS in Latin, signed “Pius P.P. IX,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, February 4, 1860. Letter to Sebastiano Herrmann, expressing gratitude for his devotion and concern about challenges facing the papacy during a period of Italian unrest. In part (translated): "You mourn and lament in the manner of sorrows and calamities. And rightly so, it is impossible that Our Son and the most beloved Church should not experience the power and greatness of the Sorrow, with which Our hearts have been affected by the deceptions, frauds and forces of the enemies of this Apostolic See. We must trust in God, and for that reason do not desist from imploring Him to send us His help, and to defend the civil defense of this seat of the Principality, united with the good of the one universal Church." Addressed on the integral leaf, which retains the original red wax seal. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Pope Pius IX, bearing his facsimile signature.
