LS signed "J. A. Garfield," one page both sides, 4.75 x 8, Mentor, Ohio letterhead, September 14, 1880. Letter to former Ohio congressman Lorenzo Danford, weighing his prospects less than two months before the 1880 presidential election. In full: "Yours of the 13th just received and read with pleasure. The news from Maine this morning is not what we hoped it would be but I trust it will not discourage our friends or weaken their efforts. The fact is there is a larger vote in Maine than ever before and each party has just about kept its relative standing last year. We can win the fight if our friends do their utmost." Hinged to a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition. Ultimately, Garfield won Maine's seven electoral votes with relative ease, taking 51.45% of the vote to Winfield Hancock's 45.28%.
