Description

LS signed "C. A. Arthur," one page, 5.75 x 9, Custom House, New York letterhead, June 21, 1875. Letter to Edwards Pierrepont, who was then serving as United States Attorney General. In part: "I have this day nominated Mr. H. F. Gamage to a clerkship in this office at a salary of $1200 per annum. The great difficulty which at all times exists, and of which you are probably aware, of obtaining vacancies, is the only reason why the appointment was not made sooner." In fine condition.
