Description

Vintage ink signature and inscription, “Hello Irvin, Give your Father the Mayjor [sic] my best, Honus Wagner,” on the reverse of an off-white 5.5 x 3.25 postal card, which is postmarked on May 31, 1950. The reverse is addressed in the hand of Wagner, who seems not to have known of Hach’s passing in 1936. In very good condition, with toning, soiling, and staining.

Accompanied by a clipped newspaper article of the death of Irvin W. ‘Major’ Hach, a one-time big league baseball player who, in 1897, was traded by the Louisville Colonels for Hans Wagner. Hach started playing ball with Versailles in the Blue Grass League in 1892. In 1893, he was in Lexington, later playing in towns in Ohio and Illinois. In 1897, he played with Atlanta, later with Louisville, and then in the National League. From there, he went to Paterson, New Jersey, when he was traded for Wagner, who started his major league career with the Colonels.
