British politician (1717-1793) who sat in the House of Commons for 38 years from 1740 to 1778. He was best known for his two periods as Secretary at War during Britain's involvement in the Seven Years War and American War of Independence. Manuscript DS, signed “Barrington,” one page, 8 x 12.5, August 20, 1765. As Secretary at War, William Barrington approves a one-year leave of absence for “Captain Claude de la Vabre a Reduced Officer of Brigadier General Newton’s late Regiment of Foot on Half pay in Great Britain in order to his continuing in Switzerland on his private affairs.” Signed at the conclusion by Barrington. The upper left bears an embossed seal. In very good to fine condition, with moderate foxing along the edges.
