ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one page, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, December 2, 1881. Letter to an unidentified supporter of the proposed National Garfield Memorial Hospital, in full: “Yours of Dec. 1, with check of $25 for the Garfield Hospital is rec’d, and will be handed to Treasurer Gilfillan tonight at our meeting. He will doubtless also acknowledge receipt as that is his business, not mine.” In fine condition, with trivial loss along the left edge.
Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Sherman bearing his preprinted facsimile signature, and a modern photo of Sherman’s printed appeal as chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Garfield Memorial Hospital, dated October 1881. It reads, in part: “The citizens of Washington and officials having residence here, have united in a movement to do marked and enduring honor to the name of the late President, whose great life was so sadly and so tragically ended…Reflecting his own wishes so far as they may be inferred from his career and his character, the Memorial designed, that of a National Hospital, to be located in the District of Columbia, to be known forever by his name, is most suitable and appropriate…Contributions, small and great, are solicited, and may be safely remitted to the Hon. James Gilfillan, Treasurer of the United States, who has consented to act as Treasurer of the fund. He gives twice who gives quickly. Let the response be prompt, generous and universal.”
The Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. was a hospital established in 1882 and named in honor of President James A. Garfield. It was a notable institution in the city's medical history and served until 1960.
