Description

"My most famous goof was in THE STAND; I said Harold left chocolate fingerprints on Fran's diary after eating a Payday and since Paydays don't have chocolate in them, I got letters and Paydays in the mail for months"

TLS from Stephen King, typed on the reverse of a 5.5 x 3.5 postal card, January 17, 1983. Letter to Rachel Janis, in full: “Thanks for the good words about my work. Glad you've enjoyed it, and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me so. Sorry this reply is so late and brief, but there's a lot of mail lately and try as I might, I never seem to catch up with it. You're probably not confused, and I probably did make a mistake about the gun — I usually make one good boo-boo per book. The copy-editors don't catch me but the readers sure do! My most famous goof was in THE STAND; I said Harold left chocolate fingerprints on Fran's diary after eating a Payday and since Paydays don't have chocolate in them, I got letters and Paydays in the mail for months (still do, now and then). I hope you'll like the next book, CHRISTINE, which comes out in May. Good luck with your writing; may you make no boo-boos and may you have a happy 1983.” In fine condition. An amusing early letter from King that dates to what was arguably his most popular period as a writer.
