Description

Confederate general (1817-1872) who achieved fame as a senior commander under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee; his actions at the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House have shrouded his legacy in controversy. Manuscript DS, signed “R. S. Ewell,” one page, 8 x 12.5, July 17, 1868. Power of attorney legal document, in part: “Know all men by these present that I, Richard S. Ewell of Maury County in the State of Tennessee have constituted William Reynolds Jr., of the City of Baltimore and State of Maryland my sufficient Attorney for me and in my name to receive and give receipts for all interest and dividends now due or which may hereafter become due upon Fifty six shares of the Capital Stock of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company now standing in my name upon the books of said company.” Signed at the conclusion by Ewell. The lower left retains the original pink seal. In fine condition, with some very faint toning.
