Description

Four days after the 1956 presidential election—"Today, for the first time since the sixth, I have had a little free time to try to compose my thoughts and realize the enormous contribution that you, and others of my friends, made to the campaign effort"

TLS as president signed “DE,” one page, 7 x 10.25, White House letterhead, November 10, 1956. Letter to “Sig,” advertising executive Sigurd S. Larmon of Young & Rubicam, in full: “Today, for the first time since the sixth, I have had a little free time to try to compose my thoughts and realize the enormous contribution that you, and others of my friends, made to the campaign effort. I particularly want to mention the work your agency did in dramatizing, if you will, the issues at stake. Knowing you, I am sure you gain your satisfaction from the knowledge that everything that was done was in good taste, and, particularly, that a number of new techniques were evolved that should form the basis for campaigns in years to come. To you personally, of course, I am also indebted. For your friendship and for your loyalty and support, I am profoundly grateful. With affectionate regard to Kay, and all the best to yourself.” In fine condition, with small stains near the top and bottom edges. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a vintage matte-finish 5 x 5 photo of Eisenhower smiling and seated with Larmon (left) and Tom Bright; a detached photo caption reads: “Snapshot by Moany – The President’s valet – New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1954, at the Eisenhower cottage, Augusta, Georgia.”

Eisenhower retained the presidency with a resounding victory over Democratic opponent Adlai Stevenson just four days prior on November 6, 1956. Eisenhower's victory was the first for an incumbent Republican president since 1924, and he became the first Republican to serve two full terms since U. S. Grant in 1869–1877.
