Description

Railroad executive and Union Army general (1806–1869) who commanded the 18th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, seeing action at the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Despite being wounded at Gettysburg, he endured harsh criticism from fellow generals and subordinates for his inaction and hesitancy to commit his men to the fight. Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “James Barnes,” one page, 8 x 10, February 1863. Document headed, "Estimate of Funds required for the service of the Quartermasters Department at Camp near Falmouth, Va., by Capt. J. B. Winslow," listing costs for pay of clerks, extra duty men including blacksmiths, a harness maker, and laborers, and incidental expenses, amounting to a total of $448. Signed at the conclusion in ink by Capt. J. B. Winslow and approved by Brig. Gen. James Barnes. In fine condition.
