Description

Confederate general (1823–1896) who led the 27th Virginia Infantry into battle at the First Battle of Bull Run, and who was wounded at Kernstown during the Valley Campaign of 1862. He later became a successful businessman and helped to organize the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. LS signed “Jno. Echols,” one page, 7.25 x 9, November 16, 1864. Letter to Maj. Stoddard Johnson, sent from his headquarters at Dublin, Virginia. In part: "Col. A. C. Cummings desires permission to ship Fifty Bushels Wheat from…Pulaski County to Abingdon, for the use of himself and his two brothers. Please grant him the permit and send to Abingdon. I do not think an affidavit is necessary for persons living within the Department to ship from one point to another." In fine condition, with a couple small stains.
