Union general (1815-1881) who participated in the Florida Wars and the Mexican War. He commanded a brigade of the 2nd Corps during the Peninsular campaign, and a division of the corps at Antietam. He also fought in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and commanded the District of Harpers Ferry during the Gettysburg campaign. Partly-printed DS, signed “Wm. H. French, Maj. Genl.,” one page, 8 x 10.25, November 2, 1863. Military document headed "Special Requisition," listing such items as "Twelve, pairs Cavalry Trousers," "Eighty-five Infantry Jackets," "Thirteen Cavalry Jackets," "Thirty-five pairs drawers," "Forty pairs stockings," "Two Cavalry Great Coats," "Eight Woolen Blankets," "One Hundred & Fifty-five Axes," "Twelve Sibley Tent Stoves," and "Five Shelter Tents," among other supplies. Signed in the lower left by French to approve the request, below a statement describing the proposed disposition of the articles: "The above clothing is for the use of men on detached service at Head Quarters 3d Corps. The Sibley Tent Stoves and Pipe are for use at Corps Head Quarters. The Axes, Shovels, & are to supply the deficiency in intrenching tools…on hand at Corps Head Quarters." In very good to fine condition, with a few small edge chips and tears.
