Description

Lawyer, politician, and Union general (1814–1862) who was a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention which nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. Placed in command of a brigade of the Army of the Tennessee, he was shot through the neck while trying to rally his troops near Corinth, Mississippi; his last words were: 'I am dying, but I die for my country.' Partly-printed DS, signed “P. A. Hackleman,” one page, 7.75 x 6.5, August 12, 1850. Guardianship bond issued to William F. Reeves and John M. Gilson "in the penal sum of three hundred dollars," acknowledging Reeves's appointment as "Guardian of the Estate of Hannah M. Reeves late Hannah M. Gilson." Signed at the conclusion by Hackleman as a court clerk, and also signed by both Reeves and Gilson. In fine condition, with some soiling and offsetting of text from a different page.
