Description

Union general (1807-1864) who commanded a division at Gettysburg and was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness. Civil War-dated ALS, signed "Jas. S. Wadsworth," one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, Headquarters Military District of Washington letterhead, April 29, 1862. Letter of recommendation to a gentleman, in part: "My friend Mr. Fitzhugh was obliged to decline entering the service on account of his health. I return the Corr'n. you very kindly sent him. I shall esteem it as a great favour if you will give this in a similar appointment to F. W. Backus of Rochester. He is now serving as a volunteer on the staff of Brig. Genl. Whipple who commands on the other side of the river under me. Mr. Backus is a most meritorious officer, and invaluable to Genl. Whipple. If you can give him a commission please send it to me, and as soon as convenient. I send you a list of the New York Regts. under my command—or a portion of them. If you prefer it send Mr. Backus a com'n. in any of them. He is justly entitled to a Captain's Com'n. but will be content with the rank of 1st Lt." Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition.
