Thomas J. Duckett, born in 1842 in Laurens District, South Carolina, was a Confederate veteran who served with distinction during the Civil War. Inspired to enlist after witnessing local militia depart for war in April 1861, he joined the 'Musgrove Volunteers,' later Company I, 3rd South Carolina Volunteers. Rising quickly through the ranks, Duckett fought in major battles from the Seven Days to Gettysburg and was seriously wounded at Chickamauga in 1863. After recovering, he returned to service and was later captured at Bentonville in 1865, spending the final days of the war as a prisoner on Johnson’s Island. Following the war, Duckett returned to Laurens County, where he prospered, served two terms as county sheriff, and remained active in veteran affairs. A proud Southerner, he lived a long life marked by resilience, service, and survival through some of the most harrowing moments in American history.
