Civil War-dated ALS by a Federal officer, one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, May 12, 1865. Handwritten letter from Richmond, Virginia, in part: "I wrote you from Petersburg a few days since. And now I write you from what was once the Capital of the Southern Confederacy. As we came from Petersburg we passed over the battle ground known as Drurys Bluff near Fort Darling where General Butler was defeated last May. If you remember it was a four days fight…enclosed you will find a sprig of leaves from near where the Rebels buried their dead. We arrived here day before yesterday…I rode all over the city today and viewed its curiosities. The state house, Libbie Prison, Castle Thunder, &c. The city was burned very badly by the Rebels when they evacuated…Direct your next letter to Washington City D.C. I will have time to receive another before coming home. Kiss Victor for me tell him I am coming home." Matted and framed with glass on both sides to an overall size of 13.25 x 16.25. In fine condition, with toning along the folds.
