Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as president and “Wm. H. Taft” as secretary of war, one page, 21 x 16, July 13, 1906. President Roosevelt appoints James S. Young, Jr., as a “Captain of Infantry in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Theodore Roosevelt, and countersigned by Secretary of War William Howard Taft. The blue embossed War Office seal remains affixed to the lower left. In very good condition, with creasing, light toning, intersecting folds, and some fading top Roosevelt's signature.

Colonel James Scott Young, Jr. (1876-1941) first joined Company D of the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a Private in June of 1898. His promotions include: 2nd Lieutenant in February of 1899; 1st Lieutenant in May of 1900; Captain, July of 1906; Major, May of 1917; Lt. Colonel in the National Army in August of 1917; and Colonel in July of 1918. He retired as a Colonel on May 9, 1921, and was fully relieved from active duty on August 15, 1932. A veteran of World War I, he also saw service in the Philippines, Cuba, and the Mexican Border. For his service, Young was awarded the Philippine Insurrection Campaign medal, the Cuban Occupation Service medal, the Mexican Campaign Service medal, and the World War I Victory medal.
