Large vintage ballpoint signature and inscription, "Hello to the Readers of Freie Welt, From Satchmo, Louis Armstrong, 1965,” on an off-white 11.5 x 7.75 sheet of Hotel Deutschland stationery, with a small portrait of the jazzman affixed to the left side. In fine condition, with minor chipping to the bottom edge.
Freie Welt was a German magazine. In March and April 1965, Louis Armstrong toured the German Democratic Republic (GDR), performing 17 concerts in cities like East Berlin, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt, and Schwerin. The tour was supported by the U.S. State Department, which promoted Armstrong as a cultural ambassador. The concerts, including notable appearances at Berlin’s Friedrichstadt-Palast and Leipzig’s Messehalle, drew enthusiastic crowds of 3,000 each.
