Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 7.75 x 10, September 26, 1878. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “the envelope containing my letter congratulating the King of Denmark on the birth of the Princess, announced in His Majesty’s letter of August 13, 1878.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition, with a small stain to the lower right edge.
Princess Ingeborg of Denmark was born on August 2, 1878, as the daughter of Frederick VIII of Denmark, the eldest son of King Christian IX, and Louise of Sweden, the only surviving child of King Charles XV of Sweden and Norway and his consort, Louise of the Netherlands. In 1897, she was married to her mother's first cousin Prince Carl of Sweden, Duke of Västergötland, and spent the rest of her life in Sweden as a member of the Swedish royal family.
