Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, July 15, 1892. President Harrison authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “my Proclamation commanding all persons in the State of Idaho engaged in resisting the laws to disperse and retire peaceably to their respective homes.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Benjamin Harrison. In fine condition.
This document pertains to ‘Proclamation 334—Law and Order in the State of Idaho’ and the 1892 Coeur d'Alene labor strike, one of America’s earliest and most significant clashes between labor unions and industrial capitalists. The events started when labor union miners in the profitable Coeur d'Alene district, a group anguished by low wages and harsh working conditions, discovered they had been infiltrated by a Pinkerton agent who provided inside information to the mine owners. The miners revolted and a series of violent confrontations, including the destruction of the major Frisco Mill mining facility, forced Idaho Governor Norman Willey to declare martial law and request federal troops. After President Harrison issued Proclamation 334, over 600 miners were arrested and several union leaders were jailed. The strike ended but it led to the formation of the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) the following year.
