Confederate general (1816-1894) who led troops at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Scarce AQS on an off-white 7 x 4.75 sheet, signed at the conclusion in ink, "Jubal A. Early, Lieut. General C.S.A., Lynchburg, Virginia, January 22nd 1887." Early quotes from "The Battlefield by William Cullen Bryant," in full: "Truth crushed to earth will rise again; / The eternal years of God are hers; / But error, wounded, writhes with pain, / And dies amid his worshippers." Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 18.5 x 10.75. In fine condition.
