Though best known for his classic television roles—most notably as Herman Munster on The Munsters—Fred Gwynne wrote and illustrated children's books. In A Little Pigeon Toad, he playfully renders literal interpretations of homophonic sayings: a 'giant hammerhead' shows a carpenter's hammer emerging from the ocean, Scottish 'forebears' become four ursine creatures in kilts, and 'naval oranges' are citrus slices at sea.
