Description

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, May 27, 1930. Letter to Mrs. W. Reginald Baker, in full: "I have your kind letter. I wish to thank you very much indeed for your views on this most difficult question." In fine condition.

To conform to Hoover's campaign promise of tariff revision, in May of 1930 Congress presented Hoover with the Smoot-Hawley Act. The bill included some of the highest tariff rates in history. Although a petition was sent to Congress to urge defeat of this proposed legislation, it was ignored. Being one of the prevalent issues of the day perhaps this is the subject correspondence.
