Description

"Some poor idiot paid five hundred million marks to send a letter. They will soon be doing it again—in Germany"

TLS as president signed “F.D.R.,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 16, 1943. Letter to Miss Esther E. Lape of Westbrook, Connecticut, in full: "I do like that stamp for though I have an unused one like it, this one is good evidence that some poor idiot paid five hundred million marks to send a letter. They will soon be doing it again—in Germany." In fine condition. FDR was known far and wide as an avid stamp collector, making his commentary on a postage stamp—combined with a WWII-era reference to past hyperinflation in Germany—especially notable.
