Description

Color 8.5 x 11 book page, both sides of which feature images of silkscreen prints by Robert Indiana from his painting series, The Hartley Elegies, signed on both sides in black felt tip by Indiana. The front depicts the 1990 serigraph, ‘The Berlin Series: KvF I,” and the reverse shows the 1991 serigraph, ‘The Berlin Series: KvF VI.” In fine condition.

Done between 1989 and 1994, Indiana’s The Hartley Elegies was inspired by a series of paintings of the prominent American modernist Marsden Hartley (1877-1946), who accomplished the works between 1914 and 1915 while he was in Berlin. Created in rectangular, diamond, and tondo format, these were an homage to Hartley, with whom he felt a strong connection. The large-scale silkscreen prints of Indiana comprise a visual poem on the two artists’ shared interests, and their innovative combinations of words and numbers within their boldly colored geometric compositions.
