TLS signed “Steve,” one page, 8.25 x 11, Mirisch-Alpha Production 'The Great Escape' letterhead, August 21, 1962. Letter to Mike Connolly of the Hollywood Reporter, in part: "Thank you for the return note. My sexy Frau is fine, in very good health, brown as a bug and speaking German, ditto the children. The production is going fine except we hope that the rainy season is over, as it is snowing and cold as hell in the Alps, when it rains here in Munich. In the Alps is where I do a great deal of my outside location work with the motor-cycle that I make my escape with. Now a bit of news. Anna Magnani has gotten in touch with the Wm. Morris Agency about my availability of doing a film with her in Italy. I have always wanted to work with her. I think she is a great actress. Might be a nice combination, Mike. Think I could talk Rossellini into shooting it in Hollywood? 'Cause I sure do miss home! Give my love to the Grauman's Chinese. Neile sends her love." In very good to fine condition, with staining from old adhesive residue on the back, and a pencil notation striking through his name.
Steve McQueen’s iconic motorcycle scene in The Great Escape (1963) is one of the most memorable moments in film history. As Captain Virgil Hilts, McQueen performs daring high-speed chases on a Triumph TR6 Trophy, modified to resemble a WWII-era German bike. The thrilling sequence, including the famous barbed-wire jump, showcases McQueen’s real-life motorcycle skills—though the actual jump was performed by stuntman Bud Ekins. A fantastic letter regarding the production of one of McQueen's most popular and enduring movies.
