TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, April 1935. Letter to Gilbert Miller. In part: "Please be good enough to issue a check for any and all sums to which I am entitled in connection with the production of The Petrified Forest, in the name of Nimrod, Inc." Below, Howard adds a handwritten postscript which he signs again, "Leslie Howard," in full: "Also please be so good as to send each week hereafter to Nimrod Inc. a check covering my share of the profits of 'The Petrified Forest' together with the usual weekly statement. Such payment to be deemed by you to be payment to me." In fine condition.
The Petrified Forest (1936) is a drama film starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, and Humphrey Bogart, based on Robert E. Sherwood's stage play. Set in a remote desert diner, the story explores themes of disillusionment and destiny as a group of strangers confronts a dangerous fugitive. Notably, Howard's contract gave him final script control, and he informed the studio that he would not appear in the movie version without the young Bogart as his co-star. The film made Bogart a star, and he remained grateful to Howard for the rest of his life.
