Description

"The European producer pays absolutely no attention to the final phases of picture making. They get sloppy technically which while our friends at home just get sloppy in the head"

Influential director (1911-1979) of classic films like Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Guitar, and King of Kings. ALS signed “Love, Nick,” three pages, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to "Gavin," his lover Gavin Lambert, in part: "After two weeks of spotty work but a lot of thinking here is the decision of the week about End of the Line. First let me tell you that I have proposed it as a film to two people and as a musical comedy to one person. The film response is mild, and I have not pursued it for I know it is premature. On the musical comedy proposal I have not had a response. Regardless, the form it seems to demand is a play. I confess I jumped the gun on myself because film form has become easier for me, but there is no longer doubt in my mind that she must go into the theatre first. My association with Judith Anderson conjures up too many slaughtered children and Medusa coiffures and the like to be able to place her tenderly in a picture frame suspended over the orchestra pit…

Work is interrupted almost daily by cutting sessions and final preparations for mixing. My God! This will be the first film I've been able to stick it out on since Bigger Than Life. No—I did, I thought, on Bitter Victory… Oh well, I am on this one and with several good reasons. One is that the show stands a hell of a chance of making a lot of money…Another is that the European producer pays absolutely no attention to the final phases of picture making. They get sloppy technically which while our friends at home just get sloppy in the head." In fine condition.

Gavin Lambert (1924–2005) was a British-born screenwriter, novelist and biographer who lived for part of his life in Hollywood. He worked as a personal assistant for Nicholas Ray and was rumored to be the lover of Ray for a time.
