Letter to Mr. Kingston of the West Herts & Watford Observer, in full: “In the belief that Watford Football Club plays a prominent part in the lives of the local community in Watford, I have striven, since joining the Board of Directors, to ensure that no effort is spared in developing the Club to its fullest potential. This is not an easy task, nor one that can be quickly accomplished and I believe it is vital that as many people as possible become involved in the many and differing aspects of our development programme. This is where I am seeking your personal help and that of your Company, many of whose employees in Watford are sure to be keen supporters of the Club.
With the prospect of Third Division football ahead we need to replace the outdated and inadequate floodlight system at Vicarage Road at an overall cost of £18,000. Το spread the load of this high capital cost we have decided to ask prominent local Companies such as your own to 'sponsor' an individual lamp for £300. In return we will provide you with two stand season tickets for 1978/79 and permanently record the Club's gratitude to your Company by inserting its name on a special board to be hung in our newly improved Entrance area. I have asked our General Manager, Ron Rollitt, to telephone you shortly to answer any queries you may have, but in the meantime I would like to thank you personally in advance for any help you can give to build Watford F.C. into the Club our town deserves.” In very good to fine condition, with light handling wear, and two torn file holes to the left edge. A lifelong Watford supporter, Elton John served as the chairman and director of Watford Football Club from 1976 to 1987, and again from 1997 to 2002, and is an honorary life president of the club.
