En route to Petersburg, Howard writes to Major General John Schofield, expressing concern for “a number of refugee Negroes who have followed the army since we left Fayetteville”

Civil War-dated LS, one page, 5.5 x 8, Headquarters Department of the Army of the Tennessee letterhead, March 26, 1865. Handwritten letter to Major General John Schofield, penned as Howard's forces march as part of Sherman's Army from Savannah to Virginia to join Grant's Army at Petersburg. In full: “In passing along the streets I notice quite a number of refugee Negroes who have followed the army since we left Fayetteville, and who are necessarily subsisting upon what they obtain from the Army. Would it not [be] well to send them to Everettsville or Faisoni Depot and have them forwarded there to Wilmington." In very good to fine condition, with scattered light creasing and soiling.
